Council waives farmers market fee for WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program event

The council approved a request April 21 from District 2 Public Health to waive the city's farmers market pavilion rental fee for a WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) event on July 16.
Julia Spinette, District 2 WIC program, told council the event would invite approved farmers and roughly 649 WIC participants from Dawson County. "We do have about 649 participants in Dawson County with 155 being pregnant or postpartum women, 161 being infants, and 333 being children between the age 1 and 5," Spinette said. She explained WIC participants use eWIC benefits with approved local farmers at the event to obtain fresh produce.
Councilmembers moved and seconded a motion to grant the fee waiver; the motion passed. Staff will reserve the pavilion for the event and coordinate with District 2 WIC and approved farmers on vendor participation.
Spinette said participating farmers must own or operate their farming business, grow produce in Georgia or within 50 miles of the state border and offer at least five types of fruits or vegetables; vendors complete state training to be FMNP-approved.
The council recorded the waiver as approved during the meeting.
