The Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors approved change order number 6 on April 22, adding $12,806.42 to a multi-department courthouse renovation project to cover flooring, drywall and electrical adjustments, facilities director Rory Giddon told the board.
Giddon explained the line-item increases: additional framing and drywall to avoid existing data lines ($1,112.07); replacing carpet at a vault door with VCT tile ($513.70); rerouting electrical feeders to the clerk of court that required underground work ($5,063.46); and owner-requested new IT pathways to improve routing to the server room ($6,117.19). He said the project is approximately $16,000 over the original contingency amount; the project’s original contingency was $30,000.
Separately, the board approved a motion to consolidate design services for the courthouse administrative wing and a planned IT department project and to contract those professional services with Envision Architecture. Facilities staff said combining the design work into a single contract will improve continuity, maximize design familiarity with the building and potentially save construction costs during bidding, while still allowing the construction phase to be bid in an appropriate fashion.
Giddon described goals for the administrative-wing redesign: improve security and lobby circulation, create office space along exterior walls for natural light, and reorganize IT spaces around the server room. Staff said department input collected during an earlier facilities assessment will be incorporated during the professional design phase and that departments will be consulted during schematic development.
The board took roll-call votes to approve both the change order and the consolidated design contracting plan. Facilities staff will proceed to finalize professional-service agreements, record the change order, and coordinate with IT and affected departments on departmental design input before moving to construction bidding later.
