House passes bill to deliver real-time sickle cell care plans to emergency departments

The Oregon House unanimously passed House Bill 2940, a measure directing the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) to implement a real-time notification system that supplies emergency departments with individualized care protocols for patients living with sickle cell disease.
Representative Nelson said the measure responds to frequent delays and misunderstanding in ER care for sickle cell crises, when patients can face extreme pain and long waits. Under HB 2940, emergency providers would receive a patient’s care plan when they arrive, and the system can connect ER teams to hematologists for immediate clinical backup, supporters said.
Nelson described the bill as a health-equity effort developed with input from sickle cell patients, community leaders, medical providers and the Oregon Hospital Association. She urged the House to approve the bill to make emergency care “more humane” for patients who have often been misunderstood.
The clerk opened the voting system and declared House Bill 2940 passed after it received the constitutional majority.
