District staff recommend new 6–12 ELA materials; $2 million purchase planned over three years

Assistant Superintendent Lobos and curriculum lead Miss Nunemaker presented the secondary English language arts (ELA) instructional materials recommendation to the Pasco School Board.
Miss Nunemaker said the secondary ELA adoption committees followed Board policy 02/2020 and spent more than a year reviewing materials, field-testing options and gathering staff and student feedback. "The committee narrowed the materials to its top 2 choices which were then distributed to schools for staff feedback," she said.
The committee recommends adopting Savvas' My Perspectives for grades 6–8, citing diverse texts, English/Spanish print and digital materials, scaffolding and accessibility features. For high school, the committee recommends Carnegie's Lenses on Literature for its culturally diverse contemporary texts, print and digital formats and real-time progress monitoring through Journey Tracker technology.
Miss Nunemaker told the board the total cost of the curriculum materials is "$2,000,000 which will be spread over 3 years." She said staff plan to pay for the materials using a combination of basic education, special programs and capital project budgets and will bring a formal purchase recommendation for board approval at an upcoming meeting after a May 13 budget status update.
Board members thanked the adoption committee for its work and noted the timeline: staff will present budget context at the May 13 meeting and then return with a purchase request and implementation schedule. No formal adoption vote occurred at this meeting.
