Council tables annual board and commission appointments until after May swearing-in

City of McHenry aldermen debated whether annual appointments to boards and commissions should be made before or after the incoming mayor and new aldermen take office and ultimately voted to table the appointments until the first meeting in May after the swearing-in.
Alderman Glab led the discussion, arguing that annual appointments are traditionally made by the incoming mayor and that waiting would allow newly elected aldermen to participate. "These annual appointments are supposed to be made by the new mayor," he said, and suggested appointments be made at the first May meeting after swearing-in.
Staff noted that existing officers will hold their seats until successors are duly appointed or sworn in, and that tabling the agenda item would not leave commissions unstaffed. Alderman Grama moved to table the item to the first meeting in May; Alderman Bassi seconded. The clerk called the roll: the motion passed with most members voting yes and one recorded no vote from Alderman Miller.
The council directed staff to revisit the formal procedure for timing appointments to ensure clarity going forward. The vote to table preserves the current appointees until successors are appointed.
