The Elmhurst History Museum received the Illinois Association of Museums' Award of Superior Achievement on April 3 for its exhibition 'Lost Chicagoland Department Stores,' Mayor Levin told the council at its April 21 meeting.
"This is the Illinois Association of Museums' highest award," Mayor Levin said, noting the association represents more than 1,000 museums in Illinois and presents a single Award of Superior Achievement in any category each year. Mayor Levin said the exhibit "broke all previous attendance records for the Elmhurst History Museum during the show's run and drew patrons from Chicago, the western suburbs, and even other states." He told the council visitor surveys indicated most attendees dined or shopped in Elmhurst.
Director Oberg congratulated Sarah Cox, the museum's curator of exhibits, and the museum's staff and volunteers. "I just want to congratulate Sarah. I want to congratulate our consultant curator Lehi Goddard. I want to congratulate our entire team, who really worked and went above and beyond," Director Oberg said.
Mayor Levin noted this was the museum's third Award of Superior Achievement in five years, citing earlier awards for a tenth‑anniversary documentary about the Church Hill one‑room schoolhouse and for conservation and restoration of a painting of early Elmhurst resident Jane Bryant by 19th‑century artist G. P. Healy. Museum staff and representatives of the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation joined council members at the dais for a recognition photo.
The council requested the museum's success be acknowledged in the meeting record and extended congratulations to curator Sarah Cox, museum staff and the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation for their work on the exhibition.
