Angel Fire hangar relocation approved; commissioners flag door and grading costs

The Colfax County Commission voted to approve a change in hangar placement at Angel Fire Airport so new hangars would face east along the existing taxiway and the hangar footprint would be placed at the south end of the taxiway, a modification requested by the Village of Angel Fire and discussed at length by airport engineers and village representatives.
County engineering staff said the rotation and relocation are feasible but will require grading changes to maintain recommended slopes between the taxiway and hangar finishing elevations, and that electrical services will need to be extended to the new location. “Conceptually, it works fine. It just requires a little bit more site work,” the county engineer said.
Village officials urged moving ahead quickly because grant deadlines for construction approach; the project includes hangar construction and a separate door replacement and structural repairs for an existing hangar. Staff estimated that door replacement and related structural work on the existing hangar could cost “upwards of $400,000,” and that the hangar construction estimates had put the project over the original budget. The village indicated it understood there is likely a cost overrun and said it expected to contribute toward additional expenses.
Commissioners and staff emphasized the door replacement is a safety priority because the existing door has come off its track multiple times and is heavy. County engineering said it will prepare plans, specifications and cost estimates on a tight schedule and will try to circulate an RFP to bidders promptly so the work can be completed before grant deadlines.
The commission approved the hangar placement as requested by the Village of Angel Fire and directed staff to prepare final specs and cost estimates, with engineers to return to the commission with updated pricing.
