An AmeriCorps member who works at an Altadena elementary school told the meeting during the public comment period that many of her students lost their homes in the Eaton fire and that the school routine has become an anchor amid deep uncertainty.
She said the classroom has been important for students who lost personal items and that staff have replaced favorite books. "My work as an AmeriCorps member has put me in a unique position to provide a variety of support to the Altadena community," the AmeriCorps member said.
The speaker said several students asked for and received new copies of books they lost in the fire and that one student has been coming every day after school to read, draw and update the teacher on the family's housing situation and plans to rebuild. She told the meeting she volunteered at donation centers and shelters across Pasadena, earned service hours for that work, and was deployed by California Volunteers to a local food bank.
The commenter closed by saying the experience has taught her about resilience and community and that she is grateful for the opportunity to serve.
