Council members on Monday highlighted results from the city’s Clean Up Your Parks Day, reporting a strong volunteer turnout and substantial debris removal across municipal parks.
Council member Mack said the event drew a large volunteer force. “Most ever volunteers — 516 total volunteers signed in. It was a very strong turnout,” Mack said, listing results recorded by city staff: 54 bags of trash, 57 bags of leaves, 17 piles of sticks and four truckloads of brush removed from parks and the cemetery, plus one ‘‘mega pile’’ of sticks.
Mayor McCann and other council members commended high school teams, church groups and neighborhood volunteers for the effort. Council member Crutch noted Earth Day and urged residents to pick up litter in their neighborhoods after windy conditions had scattered trash into yards.
During related conversation, Crutch asked whether funds earmarked for Jefferson Avenue could be used for additional resurfacing; Melinda, the city engineer, said the city expects ODOT’s contribution (described in the meeting as 80% for the service course) to cover the city’s portion for the segment that remains in scope and that the city will open bids once railroad coordination with CSX is resolved.
Council took no formal votes on the cleanup report; remarks were informational and part of liaison and council comments.
