Several speakers noted Padgett left retirement to serve the county for about one year. A county employee who visited Padgett in the hospital recounted hearing family stories and said Padgett’s family — including his daughter Susan Powell and a relative named Lydia referenced at the ceremony — shared that they had been surprised he left retirement to return to county work. Paul Donofrode Jr., Jackson County commissioner for District 3, called the dedication “a momentous occasion” and said he was honored to support renaming the meeting space. “I am truly honored to be a part of this dedication ceremony and truly honored also to be able to offer my support for renaming this meeting space as the Ernie Padgett Boardroom,” Donofrode said.
