College Place council hears youth commission plans and Lions Park dedication details; sister-city proposal forthcoming

City staff updated the council on two administrative items on April 22: the Lions Park ribbon-cutting/dedication event and activities of the Youth Advisory Commission, including preliminary work toward a potential sister-city relationship.

City staff said the Lions Park event is planned as a combined dedication, market kickoff and community celebration with vendor setup beginning early and a program starting in the afternoon. The agenda discussed a land welcome, a possible national anthem performance, a Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting, and family activities such as a fishing derby and water‑balloon activity. Staff noted they would correct some published start-time inconsistencies before final invitations went out.

On the Youth Advisory Commission, staff said commission members will present to council on May 6 and will recommend next steps, including a proposed sister-city relationship. The youth have researched potential international partners and are exploring exchanges that could include art and pen‑pal programs, shared recreation events and student involvement. Staff reported they had sought documentation from the City of Walla Walla on their sister-city process as a model and that some regions proposed by youth relate to historical migration patterns from communities tied to College Place families.

Council members discussed possible promotional opportunities, involvement of local schools and Whitman College, and the tourism and cultural benefits of sister-city ties. The council was asked to be prepared at a future meeting to consider formal approval of a sister-city relationship if the Youth Advisory Commission brings a specific recommendation. No formal council action was taken on either item on April 22.
