Germantown board approves revised police command structure, adds captain position

Chief Martin described the department’s current vacancies and said the village is “currently 9 body short.” The chief and staff identified funding sources for the new captain position this year as savings from recently approved but unfilled referendum positions and from expected maintenance savings tied to consolidation of dispatch services with Washington County. The chief recommended Option 1 to preserve a lieutenant overseeing the bureau rather than downgrading that function to a sergeant; trustees were told the net cost difference between those approaches was relatively small once overtime and pay differences were considered.
The proposed structure presented to trustees included: two captains (one operations, one administrative), three lieutenants, six sergeants (patrol), three detectives, two school resource officers, a drug investigator, a community police officer (CPO), and six clerical support positions. Trustees approved the recommendation and requested that the village incorporate the changes into the 2026 budget planning and account for the partial‑year cost for any position that begins mid‑year.
