A code-enforcement staff member reported to the Tuscaloosa pre-council that a property at 434 Eighth Avenue Northeast is structurally unsound and that the property owner has pulled a demolition permit but has struggled to complete the work.
"This is for 434 Eighth Avenue Northeast. Mister Booth has pulled a permit for demolition, but he's been having issues with trying to get somebody out," the staff member said, explaining that Booth had time to tear the structure down but would not be present to contest a city-ordered demolition. The staff member characterized the building as "structurally unsound" and said portions of the foundation have begun collapsing.
A council member asked whether residences in the immediate area are occupied. The staff member said the owner was in eviction proceedings for one occupant and believed that tenant had since left, though the staff member acknowledged uncertainty about current occupancy.
The staff member asked the council to allow the city to move forward if Booth does not demolish the house. No formal vote on demolition appears in the pre-council transcript; staff said they would proceed with demolition if the owner did not act within the time already given.
