The Odessa City Council on April 22 approved renaming approximately 2.5 miles of Murphy Street and portions of adjacent Standard Avenue and other short segments to Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
City staff opened a public hearing and invited comment; Dawn Miller, an Ector County ISD school board trustee, spoke in support and said the change was "long overdue," urging the council to approve. A brief follow‑up public question clarified why the renaming begins at Grant Avenue rather than another boundary; staff said the proposed starting point aligns with east/west boundary conventions.
Council members discussed how the name would appear on large traffic signals versus smaller cross‑street signs; staff said main intersection signal signage will display the full name but that cross‑street signs may use an abbreviated form because of sign length and wind load concerns. A motion to proceed with renaming was made by Councilman Mitchell, seconded by Councilman Stoker, and approved by the council.
Ending: The city will proceed to change the official street name signage on the affected segments, and staff said they will coordinate installation of the larger intersection signage and any abbreviated forms on cross streets as appropriate.
