Tavern owners seek coordinated safety training; police and fire offer partnership

Local tavern owner Matt Brewer (representing 101 Pub) told the committee about a recent violent incident at his business, praised police and fire response and requested a collaborative safety-training program for new bar owners and bartenders. Brewer offered to work with police, fire and TavernLink (the local tavern association) to develop training that could include recognizing overconsumption, safe-serve practices and coordination on compliance checks.
The committee and staff supported the idea. The chair asked staff to identify appropriate contacts and suggested a workshop or organized training session; police and fire said they would assign staff to participate in developing materials. The committee framed the training as nonregulatory assistance rather than a new licensing mandate.
The committee placed the tavern activities report on file and encouraged collaboration between city departments and tavern owners on voluntary safety training, cashier/ID checks and marketing of designated-driver and safe-ride options.
