The Wausau Public Health and Safety Committee approved the minutes and a batch of license applications on April 21, including previously held items for Kristen Ballmer and Tisha Baton and new recommendations: a Class C wine license for Taste of Jamaica, recommendation for a dance hall license and sidewalk café with alcohol for Westsider Diner and Lounge, and several picnic/event licenses. The committee took the standard motion to accept or deny licenses as recommended; Larson moved, Lukens seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
Owner Tyler Gold described the Westsider's plans to use an adjacent rentable space at 626 that shares the same foundation and mechanicals and said the additional space "would only be open if it's being rented". The committee said staff will ensure the premise of license applications clarifies storage, seating and sidewalk seating plans.
On a previously reported closure, committee members accepted a clerks' update that Jalapeños of Wausau (300 N. Third St., Lower Level, Suite 1) has conditionally surrendered its class B liquor license to allow a prospective new lessee, Los Compadres Mexican Restaurant, to take over the facility. Clerk Caitlin said she met with the owner and Mark Craig; the new operator aims to open in June and the license subcommittee will review remaining documents before the May council meeting. The committee took no formal enforcement action given the conditional surrender and ongoing application process.
The committee also granted a 90-day extension for Days (1715 Stuart Ave.), which has been closed for fire-related restoration. The motion to approve the extension (Larson moved; Watson seconded) carried unanimously to allow the owner time to complete repairs.
All motions to accept licenses and to grant the extension passed without recorded opposition; the committee recorded that previously held items were recommended for approval following review of rehabilitation documentation by the police chief.
