Commissioners approve application for second mobility mat at Betterton Beach; county would cover 20% match

The Kent County Board of County Commissioners on April 22 authorized staff to apply for a Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Recreational Trails grant to purchase a second mobility mat for Betterton Beach.
Jill (representing the Town of Betterton) told the board the mobile mat helps people with disabilities, families with strollers and others reach the water by providing a firm surface across the sand. She said the proposed mat would be sited closer to the beach restrooms to improve accessibility. Jill said the county’s share of the project would be a 20% match, approximately $2,140, which would be covered either by contingency funds or included in the FY2027 budget if the grant is awarded.
Commissioner Albert H. Nickerson moved to approve submission of the grant application; the motion carried unanimously. The board did not discuss alternative funding sources at length during the meeting.
If the grant is awarded, county staff will return with a formal acceptance and a plan to identify the 20% match funding source.
