Board approves summer overnight trips; district reduces cost for cheer camp participants

The Round Lake Area Board of Education approved proposed summer 2025 overnight field trips and a University of Illinois marching-band competition trip for the 2025–26 school year, and district staff told the board they lowered the out-of-pocket cost for cheer participants.
Athletics and activities director Karolczak explained that the projected per-athlete cost for cheer camp had been $429 when first presented. Working with district staff, administrators applied the state per-diem meal rate for overnight trips and shifted $4,000 from the cheer activity account to defray participant costs. Karolczak said those changes reduce the student charge by about $170 for meals and another $100 from the activity account, producing a new per-athlete cost of $159.
“...working with T, we were able to figure out a plan so that through the athletics budget, we will be able to cover their meals using the per diem and incidental expense state meal rate that we follow for overnight trips normally,” Karolczak told the board. He said the district also has payment-plan options so students who cannot pay up front will not be denied the opportunity to participate.
Board members voted to approve the trips after hearing those clarifications. Administrators said the overnight list includes a mix of fine-arts and athletics events and that they will return to the board if costs or participant counts change.
