Doña Ana County commissioners appointed or reappointed three members to the county Planning & Zoning Commission on April 22 following an application and selection process.
County staff reported five applications for three seats. After commissioners ranked candidates, the board selected to fill the seats: Robert (Bob) Zurniak (reappointment), Bill Zarges (reappointment as chair), and Crystal Garcia (new appointment). The commission read the vote tallies into the public record and completed the appointments by motion.
County staff summarized applicants’ backgrounds during the meeting: Zurniak is a retired New Mexico State University planning and geography professor with prior county planning experience; Zarges previously served on the commission and chaired land-use work on the county’s comprehensive plan and unified development code; and Garcia is an associate broker with experience in architectural park planning and design. Several of the candidates addressed the commission briefly.
Commissioners said they value continuity and technical expertise on the P&Z body and thanked applicants for volunteering. The appointments were formalized by a motion and roll call, and the new and reappointed members will begin serving two-year terms as specified in county appointment procedures.
The action fills advisory seats that review land-use applications and advise staff and the commission on zoning and development decisions.
