Volunteers ready to launch Canal Winchester sustainability commission; council to draft resolution to formalize group

Councilmembers Amos and Bennett updated the Canal Winchester City Council on April 21 about an emergent, volunteer-led effort to stand up a local sustainability commission.
Bennett said volunteers prepared a draft mission and a proposed seat structure; the group is eager to begin work and has proposed May 10 as an organizational meeting. Amos and Bennett said many volunteers already identify with relevant skills (Master Gardeners, educators, sustainability practitioners) and have proposed near-term activities such as pollinator gardens and education programs. Several councilmembers said they have heard strong community interest.
Law Director Boggs told council that because the group would include members who are not councilmembers it would be best established by resolution setting the mission, membership composition and appointment process; a resolution can be adopted in a single reading and edited later as needed. Council asked staff to prepare a resolution for the next meeting so the group can formalize its membership and begin activities.
Bennett and Amos said volunteers are anxious to get started and asked council to consider staff support and the possible role of a council liaison. Council indicated support for moving forward with a resolution and acknowledged the desire to have the committee operate similarly to other advisory boards (planning, landmarks).
