The Elgin Broom Bear was selected because it is a full-size sweeper capable of handling larger debris, it matched the city’s operational endurance needs (returning from a 10-hour shift with about 30% battery remaining in tests), and it could support post-storm cleanup and paving-related sweeping tasks. Osborne said the unit’s performance would allow the city to reduce diesel use in street-sweeper operations and keep heavy-debris capabilities in-house.
Council Vice President Forsyth asked about test temperature ranges; Osborne said the tests occurred in shoulder-season conditions, so staff expect some performance decline in more extreme cold, and they will account for that in operations and charging plans. The evaluation will help staff plan for charging infrastructure at the maintenance facility and for fleet deployment as facilities upgrades occur.
