Washington County proclaims Soil and Water Stewardship Week and Autism Awareness Month

The Washington County Commissioners Court approved two proclamations Tuesday recognizing conservation and autism awareness.
The court voted unanimously to proclaim April 27–May 4, 2025, as Texas Soil and Water Stewardship Week and to recognize April 2025 as Autism Awareness Month in Washington County.
The Soil and Water proclamation was introduced with brief remarks by a representative of the Washington Soil and Water Conservation District No. 348, who urged land developers and landowners to preserve green spaces and plant native species so local wildlife have habitat. “The theme this year is home is where the habitat is,” the representative said.
A family member who identified herself as Miss Angela spoke during presentation of the autism proclamation and described her son’s diagnosis and experience with services. She said her son, Timmy, is 16 and attends Bay’s Achievement Center in Huntsville. “We long for the day that we can hear their voices. But until then, we'll continue to be a voice for them,” she said.
Both proclamations drew brief remarks and were approved by motion, with the court signaling unanimous assent by voice vote.
The proclamations do not create new county programs or funding; they are formal recognitions meant to raise public awareness and highlight local resources and service providers.
Copies of the proclamations and information about local conservation outreach and autism resources were available from county staff following the meeting.
