The Homewood Finance Committee voted to appoint John Amari Jr. as a temporary judge to increase court capacity and help clear a backlog of warrants and cases.
Court administrator Laura Roberts told the committee the municipal court is handling a heavy caseload and has over 4,000 warrants from Jan. 1, 2023 to Dec. 31, 2024; she requested temporary judicial support so the court can hold more dockets and reduce the backlog. Roberts said Judge Jones has provided excellent service but has commitments to other courts and is not available for additional days needed by the city.
The committee approved appointing John Amari Jr., an attorney who has filled judicial roles and works in the criminal defense/public-defender context, as a temporary judge. Committee members discussed allowing the appointment through the end of the year and recommended letting the next council decide on a permanent judge selection process.
