Mason County treasurer seeks reclassification and higher pay ranges for two staff positions; requests MOU before commissioners’ action
Summary
The treasurer asked commissioners to approve an update to job classifications for two positions in the treasurer’s office, to be implemented by memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the ASME bargaining unit. She estimated the 2025 cost at $21,000–$30,000 and asked for the matter to appear on a future agenda after union sign-off.

Mason County’s treasurer asked commissioners to approve reclassifications and pay-range adjustments for two positions in the treasurer’s office and requested they place the item on the board agenda after required labor‑management steps are complete.
The treasurer said the request began in October 2022 and followed nearly two years of discussion with human resources. The two positions at issue are the collections/cashier deputy (proposed retitle to Customer Service Specialist 3) and the finance/accounting deputy (proposed retitle to Senior Accounting Technician). The treasurer said human resources proposed different ranges than she requested: HR recommended Range 20 for the Customer Service Specialist 3 while the treasurer proposed Range 22; HR recommended Range 24 for the senior accounting role while the treasurer proposed Range 26. She described the requested higher ranges as parity with comparable positions elsewhere in county offices.
The treasurer estimated a fiscal impact for 2025 of about $21,000–$30,000 to current expense and said she would attempt to absorb costs within her current budget year by shifting operations funds to salaries; she said she would seek a year-end amendment only if necessary. Commissioners and HR staff advised that the change requires an MOU with ASME and signatures from affected employees; HR said the first feasible meeting for union review would be the first meeting in May.
Why it matters: Classification and range changes affect county payroll, internal equity and budgeting for 2025 and beyond. The treasurer said retaining and appropriately compensating staff is essential to office operations.
Ending: Commissioners asked staff to prepare the MOU and supporting materials; the treasurer requested the item be scheduled for the board after union sign-off and suggested June 1 as a target implementation date if approved.
