Speedway Redevelopment Commission approves minutes, $28,501.95 in claims; discusses May events and MPO funding opportunity

The Speedway Redevelopment Commission approved its March meeting minutes by consent and voted 5-0 to approve claims totaling $28,501.95.

Town Manager Grant Kleinhenz presented the claims and described them as “very, very basic,” noting the total amount of $28,501.95. There was no recorded public comment, and the minutes were approved by unanimous consent.

In the director’s report and wrap-up, commissioners and staff discussed preparations for May events including communications and parking logistics. Kleinhenz said staff had “started doing all of the May stuff” and that planners were working on communications and parking details. Commission members encouraged public attendance and noted low in-person turnout: “We rarely have anybody that actually comes to our meeting,” one commissioner said, inviting residents to attend and follow Town of Speedway announcements.

Commissioners also flagged a recently posted notice of funding availability from the Metropolitan Planning Organization for corridor studies. Kleinhenz said the MPO funding opportunity covers up to $100,000 for corridor or thoroughfare studies; the commission’s local share could be about $20,000. He said deadlines were in June or July and staff would gather more information.

Commissioners closed the meeting with reminders about community events including a movie night (weather permitting) and the Home Helpers volunteer event on Saturday, and adjourned at about 6:15 p.m.
