Commission approves temporary billboard rental in Triangle lot for race weekend

Town Manager Grant Kleinhenz described the arrangement as a return of a pre-COVID practice in which the town leases space in the Triangle lot, between the Wilshire Hotel and the Speedway gas station, to an advertising concessionaire for short-term mobile billboards. Kleinhenz said the signs would run Friday, Saturday and Sunday and that the vendor is expected to pay $1,500 per sign; the presenter said the vendor plans two signs for a total of $3,000 and must provide required insurance.
Kleinhenz named the vendor as Matt Murray and said a signed copy of the agreement had not been received at the time of the meeting; he said staff would secure the insurance certificate and finalize signing after commission approval. “I see this as a way for us to garner a little bit of funds for the redevelopment commission to pay expenses and bills,” Kleinhenz said.
Commissioners noted the signs also can carry helpful information such as weather or safety messages in addition to advertisements. The motion passed by voice vote, recorded 5-0.
Action taken: approve the concessionaire basic rental agreement for mobile signage in the Triangle Parking Lot (5-0). Staff will obtain the vendor’s insurance certificate and a signed agreement after the vote.
