Resident urges traffic calming on South Second Avenue, cites children at play

Carol Baker, a Morton resident, told the Morton Board of Trustees during public comment that drivers frequently speed on South Second Avenue and asked the board to add traffic-calming measures to reduce the risk to children who ride bikes in the neighborhood.
"Hi. I'm Carol Baker. I live at 1500 South Second Avenue in Morton," Baker said. She described a neighborhood that has grown since the street was built, saying "there's at least 40 houses, apartment buildings, assisted living, row houses" near Queenwood and that she estimated "at least 15 children who are under the age of 12" in the blocks between Jade Wood and Lakewood.
Baker said South Second is narrower than nearby Idlewood, which has a 30 mph limit and electronic signage, and that she has "very rarely seen any police enforcement on South Second." She asked the board to consider a four-way stop at Maywood, a 25 mph speed limit, an electronic speed-limit sign and police enforcement. "I'm just afraid someone's going to get hit," she said.
Baker recounted an incident she said occurred when a driver who had turned onto Queenwood "was probably doing 50 50 miles an hour coming down the Street." She also described parked cars narrowing the roadway and children riding small electric vehicles in the street.
Her remarks were made during the public comment portion of the meeting; the transcript records no formal motion or vote by the trustees in response to her request during the same agenda item.
