Committee updated on dredging permits, spoil-site upland work and new canal maintenance positions

City staff told the Punta Gorda Isles Canal Advisory Committee on April 21 that key permits for dredging and inlet work are in hand and that limited upland improvements will be needed at the spoil site to accommodate dredging operations.

Gary Disher and other staff explained that the Army Corps permit and a Florida Department of Environmental Protection exemption for the boat-club basin were finalized; as a result staff said additional line items for that master permit show no further action because the 10-year permit is approved. “The reason you're not seeing any more action is because we've got the 10-year permit in hand, and we're ready to move to maintenance,” staff said.

Committee members asked whether land-side improvements would be required at the spoil site. Staff described modest upland work — relocating accumulated dredged material, constructing a seawall with wing walls and filling a small peninsula to provide barge access — and called those upland improvements “very, very minor.” Jake Dye and others asked for confirmation of that scope and were told staff would reconfirm specifics as needed.

Separately, in staff comments Gary Disher told the committee that the Punta Gorda City Council at its most recent meeting approved three new positions within canal maintenance: an inspector, a maintenance worker II and a maintenance worker I. Disher said the new hires should help maintain project momentum.

No formal committee action was taken on April 21 regarding permits or the spoil-site upland work; staff reported permit approvals and described next steps for maintenance operations.
