COLUMBIA, S.C. — On Wednesday the Senate paused for a remembrance after a school-bus accident last Thursday on Interstate 77 that overturned while returning middle school students from a field trip.
Senator from Calhoun told the chamber that 35 students were injured and that one child, 13-year-old Jose Maria Gonzalez Linares, died. "By now, all of you are aware of the tragic accident that happened last Thursday, on I 77 with a group of middle school students," the senator said on the Senate floor, and asked colleagues to "remember his family" and the other students impacted.
The senator said several students were airlifted to local hospitals and later released, and commended first responders for their on-scene work. He also asked that his remarks be entered in the Senate journal.
