Board members spent extended time discussing transportation staffing, extra hours for drivers and special-transport needs before approving a package of personnel changes by a 4-0 vote.
Transportation staff described how full‑time drivers are contracted for four hours and receive extra pay for runs that extend beyond that time, including long routes, midday reassignment runs and activity trips. Staff explained that pre‑trip, mid‑trip and post‑trip duties, safety checks and travel time can extend driver shifts; one example cited involved an hour‑and‑a‑half trip each way for a special‑transport student. Transportation staff said the district compensates staff for extra hours and is seeking longer‑term adjustments to reduce recurring out‑of‑hours work.
Board members asked whether equipment at soon‑to‑be surplus facilities will be inventoried; staff said Madison will survey and, when appropriate, relocate newer grant‑purchased equipment (for example refrigeration and kitchen equipment) to other schools. Transportation staff confirmed one needed item for a specific student is a lift; staff said they had discussed the lift with administration and acknowledged it has affected loading times.
On personnel matters, the superintendent said several resignations were listed and that one transfer/reassignment would be pulled from the agenda so it could be advertised internally; the board approved the remaining personnel changes. Miss Knight moved to accept the personnel changes with a curriculum-position reassignment removed; Miss Thompson seconded. The motion carried, 4-0.
Board members noted the extra hours pay is a negotiated (union) matter and asked staff to continue reviewing routes and equipment needs as district consolidation proceeds.
