Madison County School Board accepts low bid to repair two dumpsters

The Madison County School Board voted 4-0 to award a contract to Pickles and Sons Welding to repair two district dumpsters at a cost of $1,000 per unit, a district official said Tuesday night.

Board members were shown two written quotes: one from Edge Repair Service and one from Pickles and Sons. Pickles and Sons’ quote was $500 less per dumpster than the Edge Repair Service quote, a district representative said. A district official explained that a new dumpster would cost about $2,650, making repair the cheaper option.

A staff presenter disclosed a family connection to the vendor and said she had asked that the item come before the board because it presented a conflict of interest for her. The presenter said the decision was being made in open session “so there's no appearance of impropriety.”

A second staff member advised the board that the superintendent has authority to enter contracts below a certain threshold, but recommended the board act in open session on this purchase to avoid any appearance of doing business outside public view. Following discussion, Miss Knight made the motion to accept the Pickles and Sons quote; Miss Hagan seconded. The motion carried, 4-0.

The board did not specify a contract number or term. The approved action was limited to the two specified dumpster repairs; no follow-on procurement or warranty details were presented at the meeting.

Board members said the repair will save the district money compared with buying new dumpsters and thanked staff for bringing multiple quotes.

The board moved on to the next agenda item after the vote.
