Christian Ackerman, host of the Ascot Live radio program, returned to the air with a comeback special on Sept. 10 that mixed live movie-trivia games with promotion for a local short-film showcase hosted by MCAT’s movie club.
The program opened with Ackerman repeating the show’s theme — “We’re calling this the comeback special” — and then ran several live trivia segments in which listeners called in to identify films ranging from Demolition Man to Lawrence of Arabia. The broadcast repeatedly spotlighted short films made by the host’s younger brothers, identified only as Chase and Corbin, who Ackerman said produced several short movies in San Diego that the program planned to show during the broadcast.
The central community announcement asked filmmakers to submit entries to MCAT’s “Night of Shorts.” “If you have a movie that’s 7 minutes or less, you could turn it in. You got until, September 21 to turn it in here at MCAT, 500 North Higgins, suite 105,” Ackerman said on air. He gave MCAT’s contact phone (542-6228) and said entries would be judged for first, second and third place and showcased at the Roxy Theater on Oct. 26. Ackerman said Linda Aronson is heading the movie-club effort.
During the show, co-host Jack provided musical breaks while co-hosts Scott and others read trivia clues and interacted with callers. Multiple callers correctly identified films presented as on-air trivia; the program blended call-and-response segments with pre-recorded short films that Ackerman said had been produced by his brothers and previously aired on MCAT.
Ackerman described the festival entry process as requiring “a quick little thing to sign” and said organizers were still finalizing prize details. Specific prize amounts and exact screening times for Oct. 26 were not specified on-air.
The broadcast repeatedly encouraged local filmmakers to consult ChristianAckerman.com for details and to check local listings for event times. Ackerman closed the program by thanking listeners and noting the show will continue as a regular feature, identifying the broadcast as the station’s comeback and inviting future submissions and listener participation.
