Montgomery ISD honors student teams and announces new CTE director at April 15 meeting

The Montgomery ISD board opened its April 15 meeting with recognitions celebrating student achievement and with an administrative hire announcement.
Superintendent Dr. Ruffin introduced Christy Starkey as the district’s new CTE director and campus principal; Starkey, previously an assistant principal at Montgomery High School, said she was “honored to step into the role” and praised prior leaders Amy Vance and Tony Tennyson for building the programs she will lead.
The board recognized two Destination Imagination teams for advancing from state to the DI Global competition this summer: Creekside Elementary’s “5 More Minutes” (an improv team) and Lake Creek’s “Couch Convicts” (engine challenge winners). Team managers Robin Riley (Creekside) and David Herman (Lake Creek) brought students to the dais to introduce team members and celebrate region and state‑level placements.
Montgomery ISD’s Academic Decathlon team and individual state medalists also received acknowledgements. Dana Lawson (MHS) and other staff described the program’s year‑long preparation around the theme “our changing climate.” The district noted three state champions in Accadec events, and staff said some state medalists had qualified for nationals but would not attend due to scheduling conflicts.
Board members also invited high‑school principals to introduce the Class of 2025 valedictorian and salutatorian at both high schools. Montgomery High’s salutatorian Joseph Rizzo and valedictorian Addison Hedges were introduced; Lake Creek’s valedictorian Brett Harrington and salutatorian Alyssa Walters were also introduced and recognized for academics and extracurricular accomplishments.
Ending: Trustees and the superintendent thanked students, coaches and teachers and encouraged continued community support for academic and extracurricular programs. The recognitions were ceremonial and no board action was required.
