Commission staff reported the Monona room-tax fund balance and scheduled application deadlines for the remainder of the year.
Neil, a staff member, told commissioners the room-tax fund balance available for 2025 was about $182,606.40 before the recent grant awards. After approving the Monona Community Festival and Rockin' Brews Marathon grants, staff calculated approximately $77,606.40 remained for the rest of the year. Staff noted two remaining grant cycles with application deadlines of July 3 (for the July meeting) and Oct. 3 (for the October meeting), and said the commission may schedule an additional recap or follow-up meeting in the fall or early January to review final reports.
Neil also reported he had spoken with Brandon Holstein from Western Air and Sports Fishing; conversations about a potential fishing tournament location are ongoing, with selection and final dates likely to be decided in the next 30 to 60 days and any event planning most likely to occur for 2026 rather than the current calendar year.
Commissioners discussed carryover rules for unspent awards from previous years and staff said the informal default is to expect funds to be spent within one year of award unless the applicant provides a documented reason for a carryover. Staff said they would follow up with applicants who have outstanding carryover requests and give one final notice before rolling funds back into the general balance.
