The Monona Tourism Commission approved a $30,000 tourism grant for the Rockin' Brews Marathon, a recurring running event held the Saturday of Labor Day weekend.
Jerry, an event organizer for the Rockin' Brews Marathon, told commissioners the race is in its ninth year and that registration is currently “right where we normally are.” He noted that international registrations have not yet appeared this year but said local and regional demand generally fills nearby hotels for the race weekend.
Commissioners discussed the event’s heads-and-beds projection and city costs related to police, fire and emergency medical staffing. Staff explained that some applicant expenses include invoices from city public-safety and parks services; the applicant pays those invoices and includes them in the event’s budget. The commission and staff also noted that the committee will provide after-action reporting on marketing expenditures and public-safety costs following the event.
A motion to fund the full $30,000 was moved and seconded and passed by voice vote. Commissioners asked the organizer to provide final expense actuals and attendance and lodging metrics after the event to support future grant decisions.
