Crosby High soccer captains praise coach Burgess, ask trustees for continued support

Three Crosby High School players spoke during the public-comment portion of the April 21 board meeting to thank their coach and ask for continued support for the girls' soccer program.
Natalie Killian, a junior, and seniors Audrey Harland and Olivia Zarlona introduced themselves as captains of the Crosby Cougar varsity women's soccer team and described Coach Burgess's leadership during injury and recovery. Killian recounted tearing an ACL and meniscus, and said Coach Burgess told her she had already "earned the right to be named a team captain" because of her character, which helped during recovery.
"His integrity and commitment to our team never wavered," the captains said in the public remarks. They noted the team went undefeated in district play, advanced to the second round of the playoffs and that Coach Burgess was recently named district coach of the year.
The students asked trustees for continued support as the women's program grows, urging board members to consider "one thing you can do to show your support, whether it's coming to a game or approving a budget to support the needs of the team." Their remarks were delivered during the meeting's citizen-participation period and were not followed by board action.
The board acknowledged the comments and heard applause from the chamber; the students' remarks were recorded in the meeting transcript.
