County accepts state grant for Weber County Ice Sheet renovation ahead of international curling event

The Weber County Commission approved a grant agreement April 22 between Weber County and the Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management to begin a phase‑one renovation of the Weber County Ice Sheet.
Stephanie Russell, who presented the request, said the funding originated with an allocation to the county in 2022 and was secured through an application to the Utah Olympic and Paralympic grant fund administered by the Division of Facilities Construction and Management and the Utah Games Committee. The county plans to begin renovations to the “legacy venue” in time to host the Men’s World Curling Championships next year, Russell said.
Commissioners and staff praised the multi‑year effort to secure funding and noted project planning is already underway. Todd Ferreiro (operations/athletic facility lead) and Culture, Parks and Recreation staff have started infrastructure work including mechanical systems and facility rooms in anticipation of the event, a commissioner said. The commission approved the agreement by motion and voice vote.
Staff said this action represents the county entering into a state grant agreement to accept and deploy previously allocated funds for renovations; Russell described the work as phase 1 of a larger renovation plan.
