City staff: Spotlight built out, arts master plan headed to council, summer camps and public events scheduled

Arts staff told the Cultural Arts Commission the Spotlight build-out is complete, the arts and culture master plan edits will go to a council workshop and the city has multiple upcoming camps, performances and public events this spring and summer.
Kim, arts staff for the City of Alpharetta Department of Recreation, Culture and Parks, told the Cultural Arts Commission that the Spotlight performance space build-out is finished, that the arts and culture master plan will be taken to a council workshop for feedback and that multiple seasonal programs and permits are moving forward.
Kim said the city held an open house for theater groups and that four local theater groups have toured the Spotlight. Arcadia Theatre will use the Spotlight under a signed contract in June for a two-week youth camp, Kim said, and staff have added an application for use of the AlfREdtta Arts Center black box to better coordinate rehearsals and productions among groups.
On the master plan, Kim said commission edits were incorporated and the next steps are a commission thumbs up followed by a workshop with city council; staff hopes for final approval in the summer. "The edits that you gave were extremely valuable," Kim said of commissioners’ feedback to the consultant.
Kim summarized a busy public-season calendar: the city has begun accepting more public-performance permits and listed upcoming items including the Alpharetta Garden Club plant sale (April 26), Paint the Town (May 6–10) with a May 6 artist welcome event, a quick-draw competition and awards on the town green, Metropolitan Ballet’s spring performance on May 18, and an Alpharetta Symphony ticketed performance on May 30. Kim also said there are 33 Music Match performances scheduled on the live-music calendar.
Kim described summer camps at the Alpharetta Arts Center as a major revenue period that is already full for some programs and invited commissioners to tour the Spotlight. Staff said an opening event for the Spotlight is being planned, with a likely date in mid-May.
City staff credited volunteers and local archivists for a successful Black History Month exhibit and announced a naming recognition (Bailey Johnson historian) that provided archival material for the gallery show. Staff thanked volunteers and internal designers who prepared materials for the commission.
Commissioners asked for presentation materials to be shared after meetings; staff agreed to circulate presentations.
The meeting began with the commission unanimously approving minutes from the Jan. 28, 2025 and Feb. 25, 2025 meetings; the commission later adjourned by unanimous vote.
