East St. Louis SD 189 board recognizes poetry-slam winners and track standout

At a regular meeting of the East St. Louis School District 189 Board of Education, district leaders recognized student performers from the district’s fifth annual poetry slam and highlighted a East St. Louis Senior High athlete’s national and state track results.
Superintendent Culver said the poetry-slam event, hosted by Melanie Davis, ELA department chair, gave students an opportunity to share original spoken-word pieces with peers and family. “Students did an amazing job,” Culver said.
The board read the winners announced at the March 27 poetry slam. Individual winners listed by the district were Morion Johnson; Jason Statin; Demir Stevenson; and Taylor Stevenson. Team winners included Robin Williams; Micheleoni (Michaeliona/Daviona/Rain reported in remarks) Williams; Davion; and additional performers named in the presentation: William Cosby; Anaya Arnold; Jarvis Spearman; Quentin Rucker; Mackenzie Isaac; Leandra Brown; Raymond Otis; Jonathan Hale; Carl Hill; and Gianna Blackman. The district also acknowledged staff member Melanie Davis for organizing the event.
The board also congratulated East St. Louis Senior High student Shamond McLain for his indoor track season. According to the board’s presentation, McLain placed 12th in the nation in the triple jump at the 2025 Nike Indoor Nationals and took first place in the triple jump at the 2025 Illinois Top Times Indoor Championship. Culver described those results as a “remarkable achievement on one of the sport’s biggest stages.”
The recognitions were presented during the board’s general recognitions portion of the meeting to celebrate student extracurricular accomplishments and athletic milestones.
