The Trussville City Schools Board of Education approved the low bid for the high school C‑Wing project and agreed to a lease with the City of Trussville to use a city building for the district's transportation maintenance shop.
The C‑Wing construction bid was awarded to Blayock Building Company at $13,900,000, substantially below the district's earlier estimate of $20 million. The board approved the bid as part of its consent agenda; the board also approved a lease agreement with the city that will supply space for the district's transportation operations.
The C‑Wing will be four stories similar in layout to the district's existing A and B wings. The ground floor will serve as a required storm shelter; the remaining floors will contain classrooms and storage. Finance staff and administrators said the low bid leaves funds that had been set aside for the project available for other capital needs.
District finance staff noted the transportation shop has been a long‑term capital priority. The city offered a vacated public‑works site behind the public library and is leasing it to the district; administrators said the district had previously used a city facility rent‑ and utility‑free for about 20 years. The city’s offer reduces the district’s immediate capital outlay, which officials had earlier estimated as $1.5 million to $2.5 million for a new shop.
The board also approved re‑turfing the high‑school stadium field this summer and said the track will be evaluated for replacement in a future project. Administrators said turf work will begin immediately after graduation and that other safety and facility improvements remain part of the district’s five‑year capital plan.
Board votes on the C‑Wing bid and the lease were taken during the meeting’s consent and new‑business actions. Administrators said the result frees capital funds that will be reviewed as the district finalizes next year’s five‑year capital plan.
The board did not set a public hearing or additional votes on C‑Wing construction during the meeting; further contract documents and construction schedules will follow according to administrators.
