Pier 60 bait house interior repair gets guaranteed maximum price of $299,000; permanent pier options coming to council

The city received a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) of $299,000 to repair Pier 60’s bait house interior and to install temporary railing to open the pier farther west; staff will present three permanent repair options to council this summer.
Parks and Recreation staff reported that Pier 60 has been reopened from the pier base to the bait house since March 1 and that the department received a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) of $299,000 to complete the bait-house interior repairs and to allow public access farther toward the pier T with temporary ADA-compliant railing.
Staff said the exterior repairs that allowed initial reopening have been completed and that the GMP will fund interior repairs and temporary safety features so staff can open more of the pier for fishing and sunsets. For permanent work the department plans to present council with three options in the coming months: (1) permanently repair the pier in its current configuration; (2) repair the pier but remove the T (the tee) at the end; or (3) repair the pier and install a frangible deck on the T designed to lift with wave action rather than be destroyed.
Staff indicated the construction GMP and the permanent-options briefing will go to the June 2 work session and the June 5 council meeting. The department said it is prioritizing reopening and interim safe access while final design decisions are made.
