FDOT grant will fund drought-tolerant landscaping for Missouri Avenue medians

The Parks and Recreation Department told the advisory board that the Florida Department of Transportation awarded a reimbursement grant of $435,772 for landscaping along Missouri Avenue.
Department staff said the project will remove existing plantings and bismarck palms and replace them with lower-maintenance, drought-tolerant species such as crepe myrtles; palms will be relocated to more suitable locations. The project will address soil settling in several median islands — in some places staff measured 12–18 inches of soil drop from the curb — and will add new soil to bring beds to safe grade. When finished the work will cover 13 medians along Missouri Avenue.
The grant leaves a funding gap the department expects to fill from the city general fund: about $114,228, according to staff remarks. The department has hired a consultant to produce the design and plant specifications. Staff noted existing irrigation valves and meters already feed the islands, and the department can use its supplemental water truck to irrigate new plantings when drought conditions justify it.
Board members had no further questions on the project after staff outlined the scope and funding breakdown.
