School committee approves Wareham High JROTC "Survivor" field trip to Miles Standish Forest

The Wareham School Committee unanimously approved a two-day JROTC “Survivor” field trip to Miles Standish Forest, pupils and staff said at the April 17 meeting. The trip is scheduled to depart Wareham High School at 9 a.m. Friday, May 9, and return early afternoon Saturday, May 10.
Presenter Jane (first name on file in meeting materials) said Colonel Stanton, the JROTC instructor, could not attend the meeting but that the district and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education had approved the trip. “We did a year-long intensive training on high-quality project-based learning,” she told the committee, describing the trip as a pilot module for a broader program funded by a 21st Century (SAIL) grant.
The itinerary calls for participants to hike about 4.7 miles from the East Head Reservoir, camp overnight, erect tents, establish cooking areas, perform kayaking and canoeing, and conduct team-building exercises. Jane said the grant will cover student costs, bus transportation and stipends for the two staff members who will supervise the overnight portion of the trip; equipment will be rented at a reduced price through contacts at Hanscom Air Force Base.
Committee members asked about student selection and safety. Jane said the current class enrollment is about six students and that four students had been selected for the trial because staff judged them capable and safe for an overnight wilderness experience. She confirmed two staff members—identified in the meeting as Matt and Eric—will attend, giving a 2:1 staff-to-student ratio for the pilot.
The committee voted to approve the field trip by voice vote. The motion carried unanimously.
What’s next: The JROTC instructor and supervising staff will finalize logistics, including student permission forms and the equipment list funded through the 21st Century grant.
