Sheriff Lawson gave the Bradley County Commission an update on a kitchen fire at the Bradley County Justice Center that occurred Tuesday around 6:30 p.m.
"I was having dinner, in fact, when I was told that there was a fire in the kitchen of the jail," Sheriff Lawson said. He said towels that had been removed from a dryer and placed on a cart in the kitchen ignited. The Cleveland Fire Department investigated the cause, he said.
Lawson said the county's insurance representative authorized cleanup and repairs and that Servpro, contracted through a Middle Tennessee office, has been onsite and worked through the weekend and Easter. "They tell me it'll probably be six to eight weeks before we're back in service," he said.
In the meantime, Lawson said the county's food service contractor is preparing temporary meals and that local businesses helped with immediate needs: Food City provided individual cereal packs and other items and Mayfield supplied milk. Mayor Davis and others also coordinated deliveries the morning after the fire to feed approximately 500 people held at the facility that day, he said.
When asked about the dollar amount of damage, the sheriff said he could not provide a figure. "I don't know the total damage," he said, adding that the county's insurance pool and adjuster were engaged.
No formal action by the commission was taken; the sheriff's update was informational and commissioners thanked him for the report.
