State Department unveils reorganization plan, says USAID will be folded into regional bureaus; Global Engagement Center eliminated

At a State Department briefing, a department spokesperson announced a sweeping reorganization plan intended to consolidate regional functions, fold the U.S. Agency for International Development into regional bureaus, and remove offices the administration says are “non statutory” or misaligned with U.S. national interests.

The plan, the spokesperson said, is meant to “reverse decades of bloat and bureaucracy” and to create “an America First State Department” that is more nimble and aligned with the administration’s foreign‑policy priorities.

The spokesperson said the reorganization is a roadmap for change rather than an immediate round of firings, and that implementation steps are underway, including notice to Congress. “This is a reorganization plan. It is not something where people are being fired today,” the spokesperson said.
