Peoria County recorder describes local digitization effort; requests $150,000 for remodel

Bob Spears, speaking as a county office representative, told the board his office has employed about 20 local high-school and college students part time to scan records at $17.50 per hour and expects to hire about 20 more for the summer.
Spears said the local scanning work reduces the county’s need to send records offsite, saves money and provides local job experience. He said the office has cleared shelving and is working on a remodel; the State’s Attorney’s office will take half of a basement room to install a vault and the recorder’s office will retain the other half for storage.
Spears said the office is in “stage 1” of the remodel and expects to request about $150,000 at the next board meeting to continue the work. He credited IT and maintenance staff and the sheriff’s office for help moving equipment.
No formal appropriation was made at the meeting; Spears said the funding request will be presented at a future meeting.
