County IT recommends phasing out multiple fax lines after price increase; board to consider internet-based alternatives

County information-technology staff reported that the cost to continue several county fax lines has risen sharply and recommended transitioning to internet-based alternatives.
Jason (IT staff) told commissioners the bill for five fax lines rose from $466 to $1,158 (as presented at the meeting) and said the increase prompted staff to contact department heads and elected officials about whether the lines were still needed. “It looks like we'll probably move forward with that decision,” Jason said, adding that some departments indicated the dedicated fax lines were no longer required.
Chairman Josh Douthit said he wanted the board aware of the potential savings; Jason said the county is not currently locked into a contract obligating continuation of the lines. Commissioners did not take a formal vote during the meeting; staff indicated implementation steps and department outreach will follow.
Board members asked only clarifying questions during the update; no formal direction was given at that time.
