Effingham County approves $1,000 hotel-motel grant for Montrose rodeo; one commissioner abstains

The Effingham County Board voted to approve a $1,000 disbursement from the county’s hotel-motel fund to More for Montrose to support a June 7 rodeo in Montrose.
The measure passed after a roll-call vote with six votes in favor and one abstention. Commissioner Jeremy Daters said he would abstain because he serves on the More for Montrose committee. Chairman Josh Douthit called the vote after a brief presentation from a More for Montrose representative.
Trisha Funneman, who identified herself as a member of the More for Montrose committee, told the board the rodeo will be hosted in the village park and that organizers expect to raise sponsorships to cover event costs. “The rodeo . . . is going to cost, which I believe is about $17,000,” Funneman said, adding that organizers will also pay for insurance, portable restrooms and other event expenses. She said organizers hope the event will draw about 2,000 people.
Commissioner Jeremy Daters moved the funding; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Mike Buzzard. When the roll call was taken, Mike Buzzard, Doug McCain, Sandy Rich, Robert Sotwedle, Tim Ellis and Chris Keller voted yes; Daters recorded an abstention. Chairman Douthit declared the motion carried.
Board members and the presenter said the county’s contribution would be listed for sponsor recognition. Funneman said sponsorship materials and levels were available for review by board members.
The $1,000 disbursement was taken from hotel-motel funds; the board approved the payment as a standalone item separate from the earlier consent agenda vote.
