The Muscatine County Board of Supervisors on April 21 authorized the chair to sign a consulting contract with the Muscatine County Historic Preservation Commission to fund a historic-resources survey of 59 homes on North Calhoun Street in West Liberty.
Historic Preservation Commissioner Bill Kilner told the board the commission selected Price Preservation of Iowa City as the contractor; the work will be funded by a state grant and a $5,000 local match from the City of West Liberty. "We have a selection of a contractor, Price Preservation of Iowa City... Once the contract is signed by the county board, we'll request the City of West Liberty to send the $5,000 match," Kilner said.
Kilner said the survey is extensive and that volunteers from the West Liberty Heritage Foundation will assist. The board approved the contract by motion and voice vote.
Kilner also noted a local point of interest: a red oak in Wapsi Park near Highway 6 that he said is the second-oldest red oak in Iowa, near a shelter and bridge on the park's north side.
