Walk­er County OKs up to $11,400 for engineering, signs interlocal with Huntsville for TxDOT grant application

Walk­er County Commissioners on April 20 approved up to $11,400 in county funds to pay engineering costs needed to complete a detailed Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Transportation Alternatives grant application and approved an interlocal agreement with the City of Huntsville to split that cost.

The county’s application seeks federal funds for a multi-million-dollar sidewalks-and-mobility project that would improve pedestrian access from the downtown courthouse area up University Avenue toward the college and campus. County staff told the court the full grant application would be for a large capital project (the presenter described it as roughly in the multi‑million‑dollar range) to replace sidewalks, upgrade lighting and add benches; the detailed application needs professional engineering work and a cost estimate before submission.

Why it matters: Transportation Alternatives grants require a detailed scope and a realistic cost estimate; without that work an applicant is unlikely to be competitive. County staff said the city of Huntsville agreed to split the engineering cost, and that the grant requires no local match. The county’s share was capped at $11,400; the city is expected to pay a similar amount.

Next steps and caveats: Staff said Huntsville will consider the interlocal on its agenda and that a more detailed interlocal would be drafted if the project is accepted for the grant.
